 Noida is a city in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is located on the east bank of the Yamuna River in National Capital Region (NCR) and is the administrative headquarters of Noida district. The city has been ranked first in terms of population growth between 2001 and 2011 with a population of 2,805,717.

The city was established in 1958 by the Government of Uttar Pradesh after the establishment of Greater Noida Authority by an act of Parliament. The name Noida was derived from the Sanskrit word nidan which means "rise". The city is governed by Municipal Corporation which was formed on 1 January 1960.

Noida was formerly known as the Royal Gift City, because it was founded by Bhaurao Mohite on December 25, 1958 by the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. In 1960 it was renamed Noida after its Sanskrit name Nandagram (meaning "abounding in ponds").
